In a very happy coincidence, our neighbors from Dayton were also there on vacation, and staying just a mile down the road from us. They have two boys similar in age to ours, and we got to spend an afternoon on the beach with them. Small world!
Nephi was definitely the coolest Dad on the beach. He swam and swam and swam with the kids - especially Joseph - even on the last day when somehow the weather got hot but the water temperature dropped ten degrees and was freezing.
And when he was done swimming, he made sand castles and forts.
In between, he caught fascinating sea creatures with nothing but some tiny goggles and a plastic bucket. Here's one of the three moon jellies he caught.
His most impressive catch was a purple puffer fish, all puffed up and looking a bit ridiculous and very alarmed. Sadly we didn't get a picture of it.
And what better way to unwind after a day at the beach than a swim in the swimming pool? Nephi did that, too.
I only brought my camera to the beach one day, and the sun was too bright to get good pictures, but here are a few anyway.
We left without any serious sunburn, which I consider a major victory. Joseph turned a deep bronze color within the first five or so minutes, but the rest of us had to be a bit more careful. Overall it was a really excellent, fun, relaxing few days.

I totally agree about the soft shell crabs--we just tried some last month because my brother, who's a chef, raved about them and told us we HAD to have them. And the legs tasted great, but the yellow innards did me in.
Oh, and where in the OBX did you stay? We haven't been yet and I'm always curious which parts people liked. . .
So glad we got to see you guys! Hope the rest of your adventure goes well. I'll have to see if we have a picture of the pufferfish. Still wading thru all the unpacking and replacing of items......
Kim, we stayed at the Travelodge in Kill Devil Hills which was very adequate - not fancy, but clean and fine. We were only there for a few days and I didn't do much research about the OBX, but my impression is that it really doesn't matter where you stay. There is the really remote Ocracoke island way to the south, which would probably be a different experience, but the Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head area is all the same. There is a main road running down the whole thing with strip malls, restaurants, etc. Running parallel one or two blocks over is a smaller, non-commercial main road. Between that and the ocean (about one block) are a million houses and condos (almost all vacation rentals, it seemed) and some hotels. The beach along this whole stretch is pretty much the same. There really isn't a central area you'd want to be close to or avoid.
It looks like you guys are having so much fun!!! That is so great! Enjoy!!
