One of the greatest parts, though, was the kids' discovery room. We spent hours there. You could touch everything, and there were all kinds of interesting things to look at through microscopes, or bones of different animals to feel and compare, or skulls of different hominids, or magnifying glasses and binoculors to carry around and look really cute.
Another huge hit was the hall on human origins, where they spent an entire afternoon completely absorbed.
It was pretty amazing to see how fascinated the boys were. Thanks, Smithsonian.

I think you just convinced me to visit DC when my kids are young, I don't think (my) teenagers will find it nearly as fascinating.
I think you're probably right, Melissa. Isaac (3) was definitely too young to really care about anything, and Caleb (5) was just on the edge of being the right age. Joseph, at 7, was just about perfect, and probably would be for the next few years. I can't imagine teenagers being nearly as interested in almost anything that we did. The older boys even enjoyed the Capitol tour and wanted to see the Supreme Court building, which surprised me. But then, there were lots of art museums and concerts and interesting restaurants and tours that we didn't get to experience because it wouldn't have worked with our kids and might with teenagers.
