Since I had a few days off, we decided to take a trip to the desert. This time of year the cactus is in bloom and the daytime temperatures are usually a pleasant 70-80 degrees. We visited the southern part of the Anza-Borrego desert, and enjoyed hiking to several palm groves. Along the trail, we were especially struck by the abundance and variety of desert vegetation, a profusion of hardy plants with surprisingly delicate blossoms. Even though there is little water, it is not a barren land.
We planned to stay the night, so we put up our tent and started cooking some dinner. Joseph is much easier to camp with now that he's a little older. Instead of wandering off aimlessly, he likes to be with us and help us set up camp. However while helping with dinner, Joseph burned his hand on our backpacking stove. Even after we held him for a while, he was still screaming, so we decided to head home. He screamed for the first hour of our car ride home before falling asleep, and we feared that it would be a long night. But when we arrived home, he was happy and peacefully went to bed. This morning, he woke up at his usual time and happily made us breakfast with the pots and pans and plastic food he got for his birthday. So far, he seems to be feeling well. I'm amazed at his courage and resilience.
