Butterfly migration

Today felt slightly magical. To enjoy the lovely morning and burn off some energy, the boys and I went to the playground and found ourselves surrounded by beautiful swarming Painted Lady butterflies the whole time. It is migration time, apparently, and they are fluttering through San Diego by the hundreds of thousands. Looking around, I could probably count a few hundred at any moment; all afternoon from our balcony we could see them pouring over the roof of the next building and swooping right by us. And unlike migrating birds that fly way up in the sky, butterflies fly at most about 20 feet above the ground, so they really are all around you. It would have been extremely creepy if they were some less beautiful insect, but since they fluttered on by with their lovely orange wings and didn't land on anything, it was wonderful.
