Hanging out

Some of the most important memories in Hawai'i were just everyday patterns we fell into, and I don't want to forget them. We played countless games of Yahtzee and cribbage and checkers. We taught the boys solitaire. We got library cards and the boys read a lot, especially about WWI and WWII. There was a summer reading program the kids participated in; it's shocking how motivating one candy bar a week can be. Strangely, we cooked a lot of pumpkin bread. Caleb became proficient at building card houses.

We played dominos.

We drove a lot; the big island is indeed big. Songs that we listened to about two million times at the requests of the boys include: South Side by Moby, Death or Glory by the Clash, and Dani California by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

We played with the little girl Audrey whow lived downstairs. She was a bit wild and destructive; it was nice to feel like we had obedient, well behaved kids by comparison.

The boys loved catching geckos in the backyard and putting them in our apartment. This one lost its tail during the ordeal, but it stuck around in the boys' bathroom the whole month.

And snuggled. When they weren't wrestling or chasing each other around like crazy people driving us nuts.

The boys all shared a double bed which worked just fine. It was so sweet to see them all intertwined. And quiet.
