Skiing

We've lived in the heart of world class skiing for four years now, and the boys have never been skiing here in Colorado until this winter. The local mountain generously (and sneakily!) gives free season passes to all fourth graders in the valley, which seemed like too good an opportunity to let pass us by, so this winter was chock full of skiing. Nephi got a season pass to Sunlight and spent a few days himself getting back in the groove. Towards the end of the season he also had some fun days with his friend Jared skiing at Snowmass and Aspen Highlands, which are even fancier.

 

Then Joseph started his brilliant ski career with four weeks of Friday lessons (thank you four-day school weeks!). By the end of the session he was revved up and confident, and he skied every Friday through the end of the season, on which day (but not before!) he tweaked his knee going down the fourth steepest slope in Colorado. I actually never went skiing, having a two year old to watch after and not being much of a daredevil myself, which was probably best for everyone since by all accounts Joseph was speeding down all kinds of crazy runs and I would have been nervous and naggy and spoiling everyone's good time. He really loved skiing, and I'm so glad we got him out there this year.

 

Our original plan was to start one kid a year at a time to keep things manageable for Nephi, but Joseph became so competent and confident so quickly that both Isaac and Caleb went up a few times with Nephi and also did great. Isaac especially loved it, and he got to ski free this year because of his age.

 

We still have no pickup truck or elk in our freezer, but we're becoming real Coloradans one step at a time.
